About: A lot of people who start with small foldable solar panels for bike packing eventually think about building something more capable, especially for longer unsupported tours or remote wild camping. That’s when an off grid inverter becomes relevant.
An off-grid inverter lets you run normal AC devices (laptops, cameras, lights, small fridges, etc.) completely independently from the mains. You combine it with solar panels and a battery bank, and you can generate and use power wherever you are — no hookups needed.
For most bike packing trips, this kind of setup is overkill because of the extra weight and complexity. However, if you’re doing very long tours, bikepacking in remote areas, or want to be able to run more than just USB devices, moving to a proper off-grid system with an inverter and battery storage gives you a lot more freedom and reliability.
When looking at off-grid inverters, it’s important to choose one with good efficiency, solid low-voltage protection, and a power rating that matches what you actually plan to run. Pure sine wave models are strongly recommended if you’re powering sensitive electronics.
